Magpie Fledgling in my backyard (Copenhagen, Denmark)

A baby Magpie I found in the street. His/her foot was stuck in the spokes of a bicycle wheel. I’ve put food and water out for him/her, and watched him/her from my apartment window for a couple of days after this video was taken, and seen him grow stronger, and move around more. I’ve given him a hard boiled egg with the shell still on, crushed into a nice protein and calcium mush, and little bowls of water, along with some bits of chicken leftovers, and more flour/water mix, which I had seen him eat earlier (The mixture I made for him the evening I found him, I had poured into an old tin lid, and left there, and a few hours after I shot this, I saw him scoffing it down, so he liked that). I haven’t seen him directly interact with his parents, but I’ve seen him talk to them, when they were sitting in the tree above him, and I suspect that they feed him and help him out in the early morning, and late evening, when there is less activity in the yard. Unfortunately he vanished late this afternoon, and I can only hope that it is because he’s grown strong enough to move around more, and elude me and the other people in the yard. The Danish summer finally started in earnest today (June 3rd!) and the sun was relentless the whole afternoon, so I suspect he has kept in the shade under the many weeds and bushes in the yard. Alternatively a cat or a seagull has gotten hold of him, but I choose to believe the former… I have to admit I was really tempted to bring him inside, and raise

Your Questions About Cat Food

Lisa Your Questions About Cat Food

Lisa asks…

What cat food is good for sensitive stomaches?

My older cat who is 10 has had a sensitive stomach since she was young. My younger cat is very picky and does not like a lot of cat food made for sensitive stomachs. What cat food is there that would be easy on my older cats tummy and taste better for my younger cat?

latitude answers:

Try a canned food or a grain free dry food like EVO, Wellness CORE, Blue Wilderness, Taste of the Wild. Most foods have a lot of carbs and grains in them and cats were designed to eat meat.

Jenny Your Questions About Cat Food

Jenny asks…

What cat food is best for a cat that vomits everything she eats?

We adopted a cat that was a stray. I bought her some cheap dry cat food. After a week she started throwing it up and won’t eat it any more. She will eat soft cat food but is still throwing up. What should I feed her? I tried mixing rice in her soft food but that didn’t work.

latitude answers:

If your kitty has a sensitive stomach your may want to try a presciption cat food, IE Science Diet Sensitive Stomach
Or…we had this same problem with our pet, and the only food he could keep down was meat baby food (Gerbers chicken, turkey, veal) mixed with rice cereal baby food. We ended up feeding him this 10 years.
But definately, have the vet check out your kitten.
Hope things go better!

Chris Your Questions About Cat Food

Chris asks…

What cat food is good for indoor senior cat with a sensitive stomach?

My cat, who is 18 years old, has recently developed quite the sensitive stomach. He has an upset tummy nearly every day, & I think it’s probably his food. I’m trying to find one that fits all 3 qualifications, but I can’t seem to find a cat food for senior and sensitive stomach. He’s been eating Iams indoor senior formula, and I’m considering switching him to Nutro Senior, because it says it’s easy to digest. Has anyone else used Nutro, or have any suggestions for a good brand of senior sensitive stomach food?

latitude answers:

Think about this…in the wild, are there special mice for senior cats? Nope. Why then should a senior cat need special food? A senior cat (and cats of any age) should eat a species appropriate diet to promote the best health. By species appropriate, I mean a canned food that does not have grains and by-products. These are premium foods, and they cost a little more. However, in the long run you will save all that money and more because you won’t have so many vet bills. I won’t endorse one brand over another, but some of the good ones are Wellness, Merrick, and Natural Balance.

Good luck with your kitty. I hope his tummy feels better soon.

Donald Your Questions About Cat Food

Donald asks…

What is the best food for a cat to gain weigh after nursing kittens?

A mom cat and her kittens adopted my patio a little while ago, and naturally I’ve been trying to leave some food and water out for them as often as possible. The mom cat was very skinny so I have been feeding her extra foods packed with vitamins and fats, like chicken, special dry & canned cat food, turkey, some beef, and she LOVES biscuits and cheese! icon smile Your Questions About Cat Food But she never seems to gain any weight. I want to make sure she is eating enough to produce milk for her kittens and remain healthy, but it doesn’t seem to matter what food I give her. Any food recommendations for a nursing stray cat?

Also… If they stay around any longer, I will have to take them to the shelter but I’d rather give them to people who will provide a good home. I live in Dallas. Please inquire if you are interested!

latitude answers:

DO NOT Give “milk milk milk” like the above answer states – cats are lactose intollerant. Give the mother small amounts of yoghurt & PROPER kitten milk (or goats milk – as it is lactose free) out for them.

Also, the mother might like some red meat (such as beef) minced & a raw egg in it.

You need to make sure the mother’s diet is high in calcium so the kittens get the calcium through her milk to ensure they don’t have low calcium levels and break their little legs a little while down the track

Also, if the mother is now very skinny & not putting weight on, it may be an idea to worm her with a worming treatment that is suitable for breast-feeding queens….as I live in a different country I don’t know what is available where you are, and cannot help with brand suggestions.

Joseph Your Questions About Cat Food

Joseph asks…

What is a healthy cat food that my cat will like?

My family adopted a cat from a shelter. Shes only a kitten, around five months old. When we adopted her, the people at the shelter gave us a small bag of cat food, which I’m assuming is healthy. The problem is, she doesn’t like it. She refuses to eat it unless shes desperate for food. My mom bought meow mix and she started eating a LOT more often. But I’ve been told that, meow mix is poor as far,as the quality of the food goes. Whats a cat food that is good for her that she will like?

latitude answers:

Since it is still a kitten you should feed it a food that specifies for Kittens only for the first year. Try Purina One, its not expensive and you can hunt around for coupons too. When it gets older try a food that is for indoor cats, hopefully you will be keeping it indoors only. Good Luck!

Your Questions About Dry Cat Food Coupons

Sandra Your Questions About Dry Cat Food Coupons

Sandra asks…

is my cat’s diet a healthy diet ?

ok so my 2.5 year old cat
(was a stray i adopted when she was little) first she would beg for our food and eat
then only cat food and now only one brand of dry food
i read than canned food are better and dry food are for “lazy owners” so i wanted to do what is best for my kitty and bought every type of canned food (not at the same time) to try find something she likes
she only eats 1/4 of it before she walks away and beg for food (dry food)
i gve up cans because i throw them away or give them to stray most of the time
even little envelops that contain one meal she hates them
she likes the one for kittiens alittle bit but still she won’t eat it all
not only she prefer one brand of dry food it’s one type (blue)

http://www.stretchingabuckblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/purina-cat-chow-printable-coupons.jpg

that’s the only thing she eats

of course there is plenty of water all the time
is this enough ?? is her meal a balanced diet ?? her weight is ok but i’m taking about nutrients/vitamins …etc
also she stopped liking our food
she won’t anything we eat
i try to give her grilled chicken/beef/fish
nothing
she will just sniff and walk away

latitude answers:

I’m sorry, but no, this is not good food to feed to your cat. Let’s look at the ingredients:

Poultry by-product meal, corn meal, corn gluten meal, ground whole wheat, brewers rice, soy flour, animal fat preserved with mixed-tocopherols (form of Vitamin E), fish meal, meat and bone meal, brewers dried yeast

Meat is the 9th ingredient!!! All the ingredients before that have very little nutrition for the cat. In fact, cats have zero need for grain, and the problem with by-product is that you don’t know what you’re getting. It could be nutritious organs, but it could also just be ears, paws, skin and 4D meat:-(

Also looking at the guaranteed analysis I counted that it has 41% of carbs! That is just begging for diabetes!

To be honest, I can’t recommend feeding ANY dry food. Cats are designed to get their water from food. That’s the way nature designed them, they have low thirst drive. When fed dry, they won’t drink enough to compensate for the lack of moisture. They will only consume about 50% of the water they should be having. This can lead to kidney disease, UTI, crystals, blockage, renal failure and more.

Free feeding also leads to obesity. And the fact that dry food is over-processed means, that most of it’s little nutrition has been already destroyed, leaving almost no nutrients for your cat. It needs to eat more to meet it’s needs, and in the process consumes more calories from the fillers.

Btw wetting the dry food will not help. There’s bacteria on the kibble and the water would just allow it to grow.

The only way to give the cat it’s natural hydration is to feed it wet food only.

But some wet foods are junk too. That goes for most commercial foods. Just like the dry, they are often made with cheap fillers such as corn, wheat, soy, rice etc. These are not a part of cat’s natural diet (it’s an obligate carnivore – it eats meat!) and they are not designed to digest it. Grain is carbohydrate which the cats can’t process and it turns into blood sugar and fat, causing diabetes and obesity. In the wild, where cats only hunt for meat, diabetes and obesity are unheard of. It’s us who cause these by feeding a species inappropriate food.

The healthiest food to feed apart from raw feeding is grain-free wet food with no by-product. Learn to read the label and understand the ingredients. Some good brands are Wellness CORE, EVO, Merrick, Nature’s Variety, Blue Buffalo Wilderness and more. These will give your cat the proper hydration and nutrition it’s designed to get and it will be strong and healthy.

If you switch it’s diet, do it gradually, by mixing the current food with the new one over couple of weeks until there’s only the new. This will prevent diarrhea and upset stomach.

If you have trouble getting your cat on the new food, look at this website that has some helpful tips for dry food junkies: http://www.catinfo.org/docs/TipsforTransitioningPDF12-18-09.pdf

Good luck!

William Your Questions About Dry Cat Food Coupons

William asks…

I’m trying 2 cat foods, Chicken Soup for the Cat Lover’s Soul & Blue Buffalo. Please HELP me pick the best 1!?

I’m trying two dry cat foods, Chicken Soup for the Cat Lover’s Soul (Light) and Blue Buffalo Longetivity. Blue Buffalo is way more expensive. I had been feeding by indoor, low active, 2-3 year old female domestic shorthair cat whiska’s with a little purina dental diet mixed in. But I know neither is good. I really was hoping not to spend more than $25 on a big bag of cat food. I need help in picking the right food. I tried Blue Buffalo as I had a coupon. It looks like it’s way better. But Chicken Soup looks good too. I don’t want to neglect my cat‘s health for money so I’ll consider both but if it’s in any way comparable, I’d love to go with Chicken Soup as it’s less money (even though it’s harder to find). Can someone who’s used them both or who knows about them both please advise me! I don’t know which to go with. I want something that’s good for controlling weight (she’s a tad overweight, but not by much), something for teeth (which is why I had been adding dental diet in to her old food), something for her coat (to make it shiny and control shedding), something to keep her healthy and obviously something she’ll want to eat. Any help would be greatly appreciated. And yes, I know there are cat foods even better than these two but like I said, I can’t afford them and even $18 for a Blue Buffalo 5.5 pound bag (which she’d go through quickly at that size) will start to add up while a $23 18 pound Chicken Soup bag is much more cost efficient. But if it’s not as good, I’ll spend the bit extra. Or if you know of other foods in my price range better, I’ll be happy to consider them if you recommend them.

latitude answers:

First thing is, no dry food is a substitute for proper teeth brushing. And crappy dry food with a fancy “dental diet” label on it is no better for your cat’s teeth than eating pretzels is for your teeth. It’s not like cats really chew their food, anyway. So you are making a wise choice to find higher quality foods for your cat – this will provide better quality nutrition to keep the cat’s whole body in better health. I agree with the other poster who said that both are good, but the Blue Buffalo is better. But the expense is nothing to sneeze at, so if you find yourself choosing the Chicken Soup, you can feel reasonably confident that you are doing the best you can with the resources you have available. Do bear in mind that the more nutritionally dense a food is, having fewer fillers (i.e. Grains and veggies) and more actual meat (as opposed to by-products), the more satisfied your cat will be eating smaller portions. So these spendy bags of premium foods will last much longer than similar sized bags of less expensive stuff like Purina. Other brands you can look at include Felidae and Natural Balance – they are both better than Purina, but possibly not quite as expensive (or quite as good) as the Blue Buffalo.

Here is a website that is a good resource for learning how to read cat food labels so you can make the best choices possible with what is available in your area, and within your budget: http://www.catfoodguide.com/long-guide/ Another way it is useful, is that it describes how to switch foods gradually, to minimize the potential digestive upset from a sudden change.

Nancy Your Questions About Dry Cat Food Coupons

Nancy asks…

Could my cat be pregnant? Also, is 9 lives wet food too low quality?

Well, she’s 6, she isn’t spayed, and she got out of the house about 2 months ago. She has been gaining weight, but her belly isnt big. Maybe she’s just eating more?

Well, we feed our kitty Blue Wilderness dry food [grain free]. She’s about 6 pounds and is a Manx. She gets a cup a day. I found a coupon for 9 lives wet food yesterday at the store when we were buying human food. I dont like grocery brands, but since its wet food, isn’t it better than feeding corn-filled dry food [like purina]? Or should we use the coupon to buy the food for a local shelter, or just give them the coupon? I have a neighbor with a cat, as well…

latitude answers:

I have been feeding my cat 9-lives wet food for years..She loves it but I wouldn’t recommend feeding your cat only wet food…I did that and it started to riot my cats teeth as she became older, so make sure you feed your cat a mixture of dry and wet food to help keep it’s teeth strong.

Charles Your Questions About Dry Cat Food Coupons

Charles asks…

Vet Prescribed food for my cat who has a UTI?

My cat is a 1 1/2 year old female spayed indoor cat. She is 7.6 lbs. She is a siamese mix. She developed a UTI. When I got her at seven weeks she was on kit and kaboodle food. I switched her at six or nine months of age to Wellness Complete Dry Deboned Chicken and Rice Formula Dry and also gave her the grain free wet Wellness food after I learned how Kit and Kaboodle was not good for her.
I have a drinking fountain for her made by Petmate. We live in rural wisconsin and we have well water that is very hard water. Yesterday I bought distilled water for her water fountain.
She has been on only wet since she was examined by the vet two weeks ago when i discovered her urine sizes were small and she was going to the litter box constantly. The did not do blood work and they tried to test her urine but her bladder was not full while she was there all day. So they gave me Clovomox to give her for two weeks. It seemed to be helping. She was not going pee as much and her urine sizes were getting bigger. But then a few days ago, I noticed half of the time she went the urine sizes were small again and then I noticed a tiny bit of blood in her urine. So I called the vet and they gave me a stronger antibiotic by the name of Baytril. They also wanted her to be on a prescription diet. I trusted them and I bought the food. It’s Purina Veterinary Diet UR St Ox Urinary Formula wet and dry.
I tried giving it to her but I had to mix in some of her wellness dry to the purina dry to get her to eat a little bit of it. THen I had to put some of the wellness wet with the purina wellness to get her to eat only a little bit of the wet so she could get down her pill. I gave her last clovomax to her this morning and I had to put it in a treat to get her to eat it. Before today, I would put the pill in her wellness wet and she would eat it no problem. The purina wet was fresh and the wellness wet was put in the fridge yesterday morning after feeding her 1/4 of the can.

A friend of mine had a cat who would get UTI’s and they refused the vets food. They bought Special Kitty UTI formula and they said that their cat gets no more UTI’s.

My questions are: Is this Purina food bad for cats? Isn’t Special Kitty also bad for cats?

I am at a loss what to do. I already paid for the prescription food. THey want her on it for three months. It’s about the same price or a little cheaper then the wellness. I have plenty of wellness dry and I have three cans of the wellness and a coupon for the wellness wet and dry.
I was planning on only giving her wet wellness and giving her dry only as a treat, like a topping on the wet. I did this when she first went on the clovomox. I even put tuna oil and beef broth and water in her wet to increase her water intake.
Tonight I am supposed to give her the first dose of Baytril. The vet said give her the prescription food with it. 1/4 of wet at night with a 1/4 of dry at night. Then 1/4 of wet in the morning and 1/4 of dry.
My cat loves kibble. If she gets kibble with the wet, she won’t eat the wet.

I am at a loss on what to do. Any help is appreciated. Sorry this was so long of a read.

latitude answers:

It sounds like it was not even properly diagnosed what is wrong with your cat before giving her all this stuff. Only a minority of cases with such symptoms are actually from bacterial urinary tract infections that would need antibiotics. The way to find out is to get a sample directly from the bladder via cystocentesis, then it’s best to send it to a lab for a culture & sensitivity test to find exactly what bacteria and what antibiotic is effective on it. It sounds like they are just throwing antibiotics at her without knowing if she needs them.

And if they didn’t even get a urine sample at all, how do they know she has crystals? That’s what the food is for. Many cases of bladder inflammation are idiopathic — no known cause, but sometimes related to stress.

But actually, once I read about the hard water in your well, I think crystals ARE a good bet. Hard water is alkaline (high pH) Too high urinary pH can cause struvite crystals to form, which can irritate the bladder and even form clumps, partially blocking the urethra ( or even completely blocking it but that’s much more seen in male cats) . This could have been the cause of the symptoms you saw. So changing the water was a very good idea, and you only did that yesterday so you wouldn’t see the results yet.

It’s true that sometimes even low quality urinary formula foods (which contain chemical acidifiers to change the pH) can help, for example if a cat is prone to struvite crystals, the acidified food may help to dissolve the crystals and prevent that type of crystals from forming. (In the past there’s been a problem that the chemically acidified food went overboard and cats ended up with the pH TOO low and got calcium oxalate stones which have to be surgically removed. This Purina St/Ox is trying to solve that and deal with both types of crystals at once.)

No matter WHAT else is going on, one thing is for sure: cats need adequate moisture in their diet to keep the urinary tract flushed out and healthier. Our little domestic cats are descended from desert wildcats from North Africa, who developed to get their moisture from their food — the bodies of prey, which would be about 70% water, pretty similar to canned cat food. . They did not get a strong thirst drive. There have been studies that found that cats on a dry diet get only half as much total water as cats on wet food, and that is counting both the moisture in the food and the water they drink.
So if feeding the kibble will stop her eating her wet food, I would not give it.

I found that for my cat (who DID have a problem with struvite crystals and had even had a blockage),. Transitioning him to a high protein, low carb wet diet prevented those problems. It’s been 5 yrs and he has not had any more urinary problems since he went to all low carb wet food . At first I fed Innova Evo. Then various ones including Wellness, Merrick, Nature’s Variety, Before Grain etc. But if needed for budget reasons, one could also sometimes feed some cheap canned foods like Friskies that are grain free or very low in grains & vegetables.

Another important thing to consider is that there are other health issues besides the urinary tract. . Many so-called “prescription” / “veterinary formula” foods especially the dry versions, use a bunch of cheap grain “fillers” to cut their production costs and increase profits. The top ingredient in the dry Purina food you got is corn gluten meal! It also has brewers rice (scraps from the brewing industry) oat fiber, wheat gluten and whole grain corn (which is hard for cats to digest). This is worse than useless. Cats have no nutritional need for grains and they are not made to cope with huge amounts of carbohydrate. My cat was on a similar diet ( c/d dry) for 6 years and gained a pound a year even on a very small amount, and ended up with diabetes. Since then I have heard a lot of people say their cats got diabetes after being on one of these foods.

Paul Your Questions About Cat Health Questions Worms

Paul asks…

what is the best thing to do with an unwanted cat?

I have a cat who is a senior, (at least 7 years old). He has missing teeth and can only eat wet food. when I got him he had fleas and no matter how many baths or dips I give him he still has them. I even shaved/trimmed his fur and the problem persists. My boyfriend that I share a house with refuses to just let him be an outside cat because “if I didnt want him I shouldnt have taken him in the first place”. But i was unaware that I would have to buy special food and all these other problems. The cat came from my boyfriends mom so I didnt ask questions like I should have before taking him in. I have 3 other cats and I am worried for their health because of the fleas and now I think this cat has worms. I dont want to put this cat on someone else’s home as a burden and I know no one would take him knowing all his problems. I dont know if my local humane society takes in cats that do have a home. What to do with him?

latitude answers:

You could treat the fleas, do try using a flea collar if you haven’t al ready tried that , also i suggest you to use a a flea product , use Frontline and Advantage brands.frontline is the choice of veterinarians when it comes to combating both fleas and ticks. Frontilne is proven protection. Frontline Plus killed 100% of fleas within 12 hours of application.
It is long lasting and continues to kill fleas and ticks all month long. It is also approved for use on puppies and kittens 8 weeks of age and older and on breeding, pregnant or lactating cats and dogs and is waterproof: effective even after swimming, bathing and grooming.
Also, the Advantage brand for fleas in cats is very effective and safe and kills fleas fast .it has been used by vets ans is EPA and FDA Approved.

Also there is a spray that you can put on her and the kittens that is natural its called
Natural Chemistry Natural Cat Flea Spray
•Botanical formula kills fleas on contact
•Provides flea control for up to one week
•Contains no pyrethrins
•No mixing required; spray is ready to use
•Safe for cats and kittens of any age

if it has worms , please make a vet visit and get it dewormed

if you really can’t keep the cat, you could give it to the shelter but do make sure that it’s a No-Kill shelter .also call the humane society and they could help getting your cat a new home.
Do talk to your friends or other people you know and see if some one would like to keep your cat.

Plus i do know how to clean a cats ear, i have to do it for one of my cats all thetime, ALSO can my other cats get ear mits and how long will it be for the mitts to die off??

one more question, can i buy some kind of dewormer for him? I dont know if he has worms or not but i would rather be safe then sorry? Would it hurt him to just put some in him or not?

latitude answers:

Sometimes when people answer questions they don’t know what to do so they say “go to the vet”. I don’t always agree with their solution, but in this case I do. A lot of over the counter products to treat animals don’t work. The solutions are of poor grade and may end up doing more harm to your pet than good.

A vet can swab your cat’s ears and get the mites out. Deworming should also be done by a vet. It can be more expensive than getting over the counter products and doing it yourself, but it’s worth it if you want it done properly and safely.

Cats when they are being adopted from shelters get their checkups plus vaccinations, deworming and spay/neuter. Please make sure your cats have all of these plus are up to date with vaccinations even if you didn’t get your cat from a shelter.

Young, female cat wont eat?

I have three cats: two big, strong, strapping fat male cats who eat very well, and one fluffy little female who was the runt of the litter. Her name is Bella and she is 18 months old.
The problem I have that is stressing me out beyond belief is that she just doesn’t eat much. She is very skinny and always hungry but instead of eating all of her food, she prefers to eat a little at a time and is also extremely fussy with what I give her – even though it is the highest quality food, and the only food she will actually eat. If she is so hungry, why doesn’t she eat the food?

Health info: She is wormed and vaccinated.

My questions are:
Do female cats eat less than males?
Do runts eat less than normal cats?

Cats are naturally fussy eaters. Our cat (Reese) is a runt, and eats relative to her size- smaller animals require less food. Inactive (don’t play much) don’t need to eat as much as active cats.

They don’t eat like dogs do- everything available, and right away, they pick at the food as they need it.

Try other foods, see what she likes and stick to it. Pet food manufacturers offer trial-sizes of food, so visit a pet store that can help out.

John Your Questions About Cat Health Questions Worms

John asks…

Cat has fleas. how do I get rid of them when…?

you share a house. I have been treating my indoor cat weekly. I’m always vacuuming and spraying my half of the house. Even taken her to the vet. My problem is I have an apartment in a house that I share with my landlords. they have 2 cats and 2 dogs. they will not treat thier poor flea infested animals or the house. how can i keep the fleas from coming into my place. I feel so bad for the animals. and I don’t like having to treat my cat weekly. but if i don’t she becomes severly infested. I don’t have the money to move have dwindled my savings with flea sprays and vet visits. My next question is what health problems can fleas cause humans? I know they cause worms and respitory illness in animals

latitude answers:

MANY diseases have been caused by fleas, ever heard of the “Black Plague”?
You can try the adavantage or whatever you use on your cat (not hertz hopefully). And Sprinkle Borax around (make sure your cat doesn’t eat it). You can complian (maybe even anonymously) about the abuse the other animals are facing. Also you can use flea bug bombs (but make sure all people and pets are out of the place for awhile as stated on the packages). 100% Lavender and lemon oils can help,
BUT
unless they treat their animals you are most likely going to suffer along with your animals.

Hope you don’t get ill either

I heard they found a couple of cases of the “black plague” again in New york within the past couple of years =(

P4A PROJECT FOR AWESOME: PAWS Animal Rescue

PAWS is a work in progress, we started out in Feb 1997 with the intention to rehome unwanted dogs from their current homes. However, we soon realised the huge amount of abuse, neglect and abandonment of dogs throughout the County and we started to give them shelter and veterinary care… News spread fast and soon we were dealing with cases from Cork and Kerry to Sligo and Donegal… Since that time PAWS, has rescued, vaccinated, neutered and rehomed thousands of dogs and as 70% of these were adults, our neutering programme has prevented millions of unwanted puppies being born and consequently dumped in ditches, dustbins and dog pounds. Sometimes we feel like ‘giving up and giving in’ but then somebody says a kind word or calls to visit, with a happy, healthy adored pet, which when it originally came in to our care was a quivering, ravenous, petrified mess. Days like those give you the strength to carry on that extra mile. As you may know, we at PAWS depend totally on the public to help us to keep our doors open to abandoned and abused animals. The National Lottery have thus far ignored pleas from Animal Welfare groups to grant aid our work and the Dept of Agriculture very kindly give a small grant each year to rescue centers Sadly, however, this covers only a minute portion of the running costs, which ran to over 300 thousand euro last year. The rest is made up from flag days, fundraisers and donations. We, at PAWS now find ourselves under serious pressure. Our biggest

Your Questions About Kitty Litter Cake

William Your Questions About Kitty Litter Cake

William asks…

Kitty Litter Cake websites Please?

Not the ones you find right away….

latitude answers:

I’ve made the kitty litter cake many times – I’ll warn you this much, it usually doesn’t get eaten. I guess it’s something about the gross factor but I’ve taken that cake to 4 or 5 different pot luck dinners and usually wind up taking 3/4 of it back home with me, to be dumped out. The people who DO try it say it tastes really good, but usually everyone turns their nose up at it.

David Your Questions About Kitty Litter Cake

David asks…

Who here has heard of Kitty Litter Cake?

Where did you hear about it?

latitude answers:

Is it for Halloween? I ran a Google search

INGREDIENTS
1 (18.25 ounce) package German chocolate cake mix
1 (18.25 ounce) package white cake mix
2 (3.5 ounce) packages instant vanilla pudding mix
1 (12 ounce) package vanilla sandwich cookies
3 drops green food coloring
1 (12 ounce) package tootsie rolls
DIRECTIONS
Prepare cake mixes and bake according to package directions (any size pan).
Prepare pudding according to package directions and chill until ready to assemble.
Crumble sandwich cookies in small batches in a food processor, scraping often. Set aside all but 1/4 cup. To the 1/4 cup add a few drops of green food coloring and mix.
When cakes are cooled to room temperature, crumble them into a large bowl. Toss with 1/2 of the remaining cookie crumbs, and the chilled pudding. You probably won’t need all of the pudding, you want the cake to be just moist, not soggy.
Line kitty litter box with the kitty litter liner. Put cake mixture into box.
Put half of the unwrapped tootsie rolls in a microwave safe dish and heat until softened. Shape the ends so that they are no longer blunt, and curve the tootsie rolls slightly. Bury tootsie rolls randomly in the cake and sprinkle with half of the remaining cookie crumbs. Sprinkle a small amount of the green colored cookie crumbs lightly over the top.
Heat 3 or 4 of the tootsie rolls in the microwave until almost melted. Scrape them on top of the cake and sprinkle lightly with some of the green cookie crumbs. Heat the remaining tootsie rolls until pliable and shape as before. Spread all but one randomly over top of cake mixture. Sprinkle with any remaining cookie crumbs. Hang the remaining tootsie roll over side of litter box and sprinkle with a few green cookie crumbs. Serve with the pooper scooper for a gross Halloween dessert.

Looks disgusting though! Lol

Helen Your Questions About Kitty Litter Cake

Helen asks…

Any other recipes out there scarier than Kitty Litter Cake?

And more gross?

latitude answers:

I love making a cemetery cake. Make your favorite cake in a 13x9x2 pan, take white icing and add green food color to make a nice green grass shade. Use Milano cookies for headstones and gummy worms for well effects. I take the cookie parts from oreos to make a freshly dug grave, pile it up like dirt etc. I have also buried cotton balls before making the cake and noted the spots with toothpicks then laughed my butt off when someone got that piece. JUST MAKE SURE LITTLE KIDS DONT GET THAT PART. I guess someone could choke on it, but my Friends all know me to look for the strange and weird things. Good Luck KG
